One of my favorite things about our trip to Kenya was visiting local schools. We went to three elementary schools, and two high schools. We toured the classrooms and watched as hundreds of amazing children recited poems, sang for us, and danced. The teachers have poured their hearts and souls into these young lives – and it was breathtaking.
These little ones especially captured my heart. The little girl sitting second from the right fell asleep on my lap while sucking her thumb. Shortly after my friend snapped this photo, four more girls joined us. While I wished that I could snuggle with these little ones forever, I was also blown away with the realization that I was sitting with the future of Kenya.
As I said goodbye to the little girls and teachers that day, I realized that the future of this beautiful country is in good hands – and I am grateful that I got to witness it firsthand.
So many girls around the world aren’t able to complete their schooling for lack of funds, missing class because of periods, pregnancy, early marriage, working to support their families…and the list goes on. Let’s change that. Sheryl WuDunn, co-author of the book Half the Sky, says, “Educate a girl and she can change the world around her.” The heart of SheHopes is unlocking HOPE for girls and women, and a big part of that is education. We don’t just want to stop this cycle – we want to break it. And we can change this – together!
